Skin cancer drug dramatically raises survival rates

“A new treatment for advanced skin cancer has been hailed as a paradigm shift after it boosted one-year survival chances from one in 10 to almost three in four.

Early tests using a drug to prompt the body’s immune system to attack malignant melanoma found that 74% of patients were still alive after one year, compared with 10 per cent at present.

Dr. David Chao, a consultant oncologist at Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust, said Pembrolizumab had the potential to be a paradigm shift for cancer therapy and could benefit the many patients with advanced melanoma in the UK.
